5 Ways to Transform your Garden on a Budget

5 Ways to Transform your Garden on a Budget

Improve your garden without paying for a complete redesign. These five affordable jobs can make your outdoor space cleaner, brighter and more usable.

1. Clear the Garden in the Right Order

An overgrown garden can feel smaller than it really is. Complete the work in an order that avoids doing the same job twice:

  • Trim hedges and shrubs so the cuttings fall onto the lawn.
  • Remove dead growth, leaves and larger waste.
  • Mow the lawn to neaten the space.
  • Define the edges between lawns, borders and paths.

If the grass is very long, begin on the mower’s highest setting or strim it before mowing. Cutting it extremely short in one go may leave it looking weak or patchy.

2. Restore the Patio Before Replacing It

Paving can look tired because of surface dirt, algae and weeds rather than permanent damage.

Sweep it thoroughly, clear the joints and use a cleaner suitable for the paving material. A pressure washer can speed up the job, but test a hidden area first and avoid holding the jet too close to the surface.

Trade tip: If pressure washing removes sand from block-paving joints, allow the surface to dry and brush compatible kiln-dried sand back into them. This helps maintain the joints rather than leaving them open.

3. Paint One Large Surface

Rather than painting every object in the garden, concentrate on the largest tired-looking surface.

A fresh finish on a fence or shed can change the backdrop of the whole space. Clean the timber, repair loose boards and let it dry before applying an exterior treatment.

You can use the same or a complementary shade on old planters to bring the area together.

Paint improves sound timber, but it will not repair rotten posts or unstable fencing.

4. Concentrate Your Planting

Spreading a few small plants around the entire garden can make them disappear. Group them where you will notice them, such as beside the back door, around the patio or against a bare fence.

To keep costs down:

  • Grow annual flowers from seed.
  • Buy young plants rather than mature specimens.
  • Divide suitable plants you already own.
  • Reuse pots or look for second-hand containers.

Group pots together and vary their heights rather than lining them up in a row. Container groups can add structure and interest to patios and decking.

5. Make One Area Comfortable

Do not try to furnish the whole garden. Choose one place for sitting, eating or relaxing and make that area work properly.

Start by moving furniture to a sunnier, more sheltered position. Then add one or two inexpensive details:

  • Outdoor cushions.
  • Solar or battery-powered lighting.
  • A small table.
  • Pots around the edge of the seating area.

Improve Before You Replace

Begin with cutting back, cleaning and rearranging. These jobs may reveal that the lawn, paving, fencing and furniture are still perfectly usable.
